LinkedIn opens to outside developers

LinkedIn, a social network targeting business professionals, has redesigned its site and introduced a new platform encouraging outside developers to create tools that will enhance the productivity of professionals.

All these changes are geared towards expanding its membership and hopefully maintain competitiveness against arch rival Facebook.

Dubbed as the Intelligent Applications Platform, it allows interested developers to create widgets and APIs as well as embed LinkedIn features in partner websites. BusinessWeek magazine is the initial partner of LinkedIn for this project. LinkedIn members who visit this magazine can place their mouse over certain keywords like company names and a pop-up box will appear showing the number of their LinkedIn contacts related to keywords.
